Celebrate Restorative Justice Week 2022 at Maynooth University

Film screening of The Meeting at Maynooth University

On Monday 21st November 2022, Maynooth University School of Law and Criminology and the Restorative Justice: Strategies for Change project are hosting a screening of The Meeting. This will take place in JHL1 (John Hume Building) on North Campus from 17:00-20:00. Light snacks will be provided.

The film will open with a short introduction from the event chair, Dr. Ian Marder, and is followed by a discussion with Dr. Marie Keenan (UCD School of Social Policy, Social Work and Social Justice, featuring in the film), Dr. Sinéad Ring (Maynooth University School of Law and Criminology) and Dr. Gemma Irvine (Vice-President for Equality and Diversity, Maynooth University).

The Meeting features restorative justice - whereby a victim of crime participates in a facilitated meeting with the person who committed the crime - following sexual violence. Please consider this when deciding if you would like to attend.

Content warning - discussions and images relating to sexual violence throughout

In a modest room in a Dublin suburb, two people prepare for a meeting that could have an enormous impact on their lives. For both of them, it is a complete step into the unknown. The film is based on a real meeting which took place between Ailbhe Griffith and the man who, nine years earlier, subjected her to a horrific sexual assault and left her seriously injured and fearing for her life.

Griffith, in an extraordinary move, has chosen to play herself in this unique drama from one of Ireland’s most provocative filmmakers, Alan Gilsenan. What emerges is a truly unique and unorthodox cinematic experience as Ailbhe courageously seeks healing through a progressive form of justice, rapidly gaining momentum throughout the world.
