Mercy Law Resource Centre (MLRC) is hosting a Conference on Social Housing, Domestic Violence and the Public Sector Duty on 5 September 2023 from 9.30am – 1pm in the Wisdom Centre, 25 Cork Street, Dublin D08 YD91.

This multi-disciplinary conference will see academic and legal experts as well as civil society voices discuss the barriers to accessing social housing supports experienced by people who have suffered domestic violence.

The event will incorporate the launch of a new report by MLRC “Social Housing, Domestic Violence and the Public Sector Duty” which will focus on the intersection of domestic violence and homelessness and, in particular, the barriers to accessing housing supports faced by those who have fled their homes because of domestic violence. In seeking to set out the existing legal and policy landscape for victims of domestic violence, the report will draw on relevant international experiences to make suggestions for change. It will also consider the way in which the Public Sector Equality and Human Rights Duty might effect change and result in benefits for those fleeing domestic violence. The aim of the report and conference is to produce practical proposals for change and spark a dialogue with key stakeholders.

Noted speakers will include Ivana Bacik T.D., who will open the conference, as well as report author and academic Dr. Sarah Hamill of TCD Law School, Sinéad Gibney, Chief Commissioner of the Irish Human Rights and Equality Commission, legal practitioner, Sandra McAleer and other distinguished speakers.
