“We are facing daunting contemporary challenges of populism, climate catastrophe, attacks on the rule of law, inequalities, pandemics and digitalization.

As legal advocates and legal activists these challenges provide powerful reasons to reform, innovate and strengthen the tools and practices of human rights and anti-discrimination movements for the future.

This is a rare opportunity to hear a leading international legal perspective. Join us to hear Professor Gráinne de Búrca, author of ‘Reframing Human Rights in a Turbulent Era’, reflect on these challenges and mobilising human rights in Ireland’.

Eilis Barry, FLAC CE

Gráinne de Búrca is Florence Ellinwood Allen Professor of Law at NYU and Director of the Hauser Global Law Program. Before joining NYU in 2011, she held tenured posts as professor at Harvard Law School, Fordham Law School, and at the European University Institute in Florence, Italy. Before that, she was Fellow of Somerville College and lecturer in law at Oxford University. Her main fields of research are European Union law and international human rights law. She is co-editor of the Oxford University Press series Oxford Studies in European Law, and co-author of the leading OUP textbook EU Law. She is co-editor-in-chief of the International Journal of Constitutional Law (I•CON), a member of the board of editors of the American Journal of International Law, and a Corresponding Fellow of the British Academy.

The FLAC Annual Justice Lecture, in memory of Dave Ellis, is an important event in the FLAC calendar as it brings together the broad-based FLAC family and provides an alternative legal space, inviting prominent people to reflect and drive debate on topical legal and social issues.

The late Dave Ellis was a community activist who dedicated his career to working with community groups on issues including welfare rights, legal aid, legal education and legal entitlements generally. He was Community Law Officer at Coolock Community Law Centre (now Community Law & Mediation) for more than 20 years. Dave Ellis subsequently established Community Legal Resource to provide information, training and support for the not-for-profit and community sector.

The past speakers were: Mary Robinson, Marc Rotenberg, Emily O'Reilly, Justice Edwin Cameron, Michael Farrell, FLAC, Bryan Stevenson, Martin O'Brien, Thomas Hammarberg, Baroness Nuala O'Loan, Michael Mansfield QC, Dr Maurice Hayes, Steve Shapiro, and Prof Gerry Whyte.

If you require sign-language interpretation or other assistance, please let us know as soon as possible so that we can make the appropriate arrangements.

There is no charge to attend the FLAC Justice Lecture. However, if you would like to make a donation to support FLAC's work to promote equal access to justice, it would be greatly appreciated.
