Children’s Rights Alliance: Catherine McGuinness Fellowship on Children’s Rights and Child Law – closing date 23 August 2019

Recruitment is commencing for the Children’s Rights Alliance and The Bar of Ireland prestigious one-year Fellowship Programme for newly-qualified barristers. Now in its fifth year, this exciting and important fellowship is named in honour of Judge Catherine McGuinness, one of Ireland’s greatest children’s rights champions. This Fellowship is supported by the Family Lawyers’ Association of Ireland.

The Fellow will work and be managed as part of the Children’s Rights Alliance Legal and Policy Team, which works to reform law and policy in the area of children’s rights and child law in the Irish context.

The position:

  • Is based in the Children’s Rights Alliance offices at 7 Red Cow Lane, Smithfield, Dublin 7
  • Is one day a week for a period of one calendar year (starting October 2019)
  • Has flexibility in the days/hours worked each week as agreed with their line manager
  • Pays a monthly stipend.

Applicants should be recently-qualified barristers (preferably within four years) with a demonstrated interest and commitment to children’s rights and practicing law that particularly impacts children and young people. They must possess the ability to work on their own initiative as well as operate effectively as part of the Children’s Rights Alliance team. It is expected that the Fellowship will provide the successful applicant with a valuable opportunity to advocate to Government for the rights of children, analyse relevant legislative proposals that impact on children, contribute to research on the Children’s Rights Alliance annual flagship publication, Report Card, and to take part in providing legal information and support to our Access to Justice Helpline and Clinics. The Fellow will prepare an article for the Bar Review and deliver a lecture for Law Library members.

The Fellow will be provided with a unique developmental opportunity, enhancing their reputation and future employability. They will become a champion for children’s rights and will be better equipped to advocate to protect, promote and fulfil children’s rights.

Closing date for receipt of applications is close of business on Wednesday 23 August 2019. Interviews will take place on Wednesday 4 September 2019.
