Children’s Rights Alliance: Catherine McGuinness Fellowship – deadline 9 July 2018

Recruitment is commencing for the Children’s Rights Alliance and The Bar of Ireland prestigious one year Fellowship Programme for newly-qualified barristers.  Now in its third year, this exciting and important fellowship is named in honour of Judge Catherine McGuinness, one of Ireland’s greatest children’s rights champions.  This Fellowship is supported by the Family Lawyers’ Association of Ireland.

The Fellow will work and be managed as part of the Children’s Rights Alliance Legal and Policy Team which works to reform law and policy in the area of children’s rights and child law in the Irish context.  The position: 

  • Is based in the Children’s Rights Alliance offices 
  • Is one day a week for a period of one calendar year (starting September 2018)
  • Has flexibility in the days/hours worked each week as agreed with their line manager  Receives a monthly stipend. 

Applicants should be recently-qualified barristers (preferably within four years) with a demonstrated interest and commitment to children’s rights and practicing law that particularly impacts children.  They must possess the ability to work on their own initiative as well as operate effectively as part of the Children’s Rights Alliance team.  It is expected that the Fellowship will provide the successful applicant with a valuable opportunity to analyse relevant legislative proposals that may impact on children, contribute to research on the Children’s Rights Alliance annual flagship publication and Report Card.  The Fellow will prepare an article for the Bar Review and the Family Law Journal.

The Fellow will be provided with a unique developmental opportunity, enhancing their reputation and future employability.  They will become a champion for children’s rights and will be able to advocate better to protect, promote and fulfil children’s rights.
