Venue: The Blue Room, The Law Society of Ireland, Blackhall Place
The Law Society of Ireland is hosting an evening to learn more about its Public Legal Education initiatives and how you can get involved. This event is both for solicitors keen to facilitate their own PLE initiative in their community and also for NGOs or CSOs who have a need for a legal education programme and keen to hear more about how this programme can meet their needs
Attendance is free, but you must register in advance.
You will have an opportunity to hear from two recent graduates of the Certificate in Public Legal Education; Mary Henderson (McGrath McGrane Solicitors) and Gillian Brennan (Nathaniel Lacy & Partners) on their experience of becoming a Law Society of Ireland approved Street Law Trainers. Anne Costelloe (Head teacher, Mountjoy Prison) will provide an insight into the impact of the recent Street Law programme on prisoners and Dr. Freda Grealy (Law Society) will discuss our Public Legal Education programme and the structure of the Certificate in Public Legal Education.
There will be plenty of opportunity to network with peers, and to be introduced to lots of like-minded colleagues over refreshments which will be served from 5:30pm.
This event is a great way to get a sense of our Public Legal Education initiatives with the added benefit of gaining 1 hour CPD M&PD.
Public Legal Education at the Law Society of Ireland
The Law Society of Ireland actively supports Public Legal Education (PLE) projects through a series of initiatives and engagement with solicitor, trainees and the public. PLE aims to increase awareness of the law by teaching people about our legal system and how law impacts on society, so they can better exercise their legal rights and responsibilities. These include:
Certificate in Public Legal Education
This certificate is a programme which aims to develop the skills of solicitors to run an effective public legal education programme in their community, based on the pedagogical approach and learner centred methodologies of Street Law.
This is an annual course and initial training takes place at the Street Law Orientation weekend this September 21, 22 & 23. The programme runs for approximately 6 months.
Upon successful completion of the programme, participants will be awarded a Certificate in Public Legal Education and will also be recognised as a Law Society of Ireland approved Street Law Trainer. See our website for full details: https://www.lawsociety.ie/PLE
