Irish Rule of Law International: Various Positions in the Access to Justice Programme – deadline 5 August 2016

Irish Rule of Law International is seeking applications for volunteer programme lawyer positions based in Malawi.

Irish Rule of Law International (IRLI) is a project-orientated, non-profit rule of law initiative established by the Law Society of Ireland and The Bar of Ireland, which seeks to advance collective knowledge of the relationship between rule of law, democracy, sustained economic development and human rights.

Volunteer Programme Lawyer (Legal Aid) – Access to Justice Programme

This is a 12-24 month placement based in Lilongwe, Malawi with an expected start date between September and November 2016. Travel expenses, health insurance and a Monthly Volunteer Living Allowance will be provided.

The role involves facilitating training workshops for legal personnel on relevant criminal law, practical legal skills and human rights issues; provide legal advice and assistance to prisoners in conjunction with the Legal Aid Bureau; advise Legal Aid staff on drafting court applications and processing cases to their conclusion etc.

Candidates should be a qualified solicitor or barrister with at least 1 year post-qualification experience, and a postgraduate degree in an area like law, human rights, development would be desirable. Fluency in written and spoken English is essential and further desirable experience includes working in a legal/development/human rights context; case/office management and client care; planning workshops; drafting skills; diplomacy and negotiation skills etc.

Volunteer Programme Lawyer (Malawi Police Service) – Access to Justice Programme

This is a 12-24 month placement based in Lilongwe, Malawi seeking a start date as soon as possible. . Travel expenses, health insurance and a Monthly Volunteer Living Allowance will be provided. The successful applicant must be available to travel to Malawi by 10 September.

The role involves working with the Malawi Police Service (MPS) to build the capacity of police officers on issues relating to criminal law and human rights through trainings and to help strengthen the relationship between the MPS and the Department of Social Welfare.

Candidates should be a qualified solicitor or barrister with at least 1 year post-qualification experience. A postgraduate degree in law, human rights, development or a related are is essential. Other desirable experience includes working in a legal/development/human rights context; working with police services in a law enforcement capacity; preparing, working with and managing budgets; managerial and organisational skills; diplomacy and negotiation skills etc.
