International Human Rights: Perspectives from Ireland examines Ireland’s engagement with, and influence of the international human rights regime.
International human rights norms are increasingly being taken into account by legislators, courts and public bodies in taking decisions and implementing actions that impact on human rights. The book brings together a wide range of academics with expertise and knowledge in specific areas of human rights philosophy and the practice of human rights vis-à-vis Ireland.
Section 1 examines the philosophical development of human rights and the challenges. Section 2 covers the international human rights framework and its applicability to Ireland. Section 3 contains a series of chapters focused on the implementation of human rights in Ireland covering a number of thematic issues such as information and privacy, freedom of religion, rights of persons with disabilities, women’s rights in peace and conflict, immigration and protection issues and children’s rights in Ireland to name a few. The final section focuses on Irish foreign policy and human rights abroad aswell as the obligations of Irish organisations responding to humanitarian crisis.
The official launch will take place at the Gardiner Atrium, UCD Sutherland School of Law on Tuesday 8 December at 6:30 pm.
