The joint DIT/TCD ‘Changing Ireland, Changing Law’ (CICL) legal research project will hold a ‘Women Changing Law, Changing Society’ seminar exploring women’s rights and legal change.
This seminar series aims to explore the relationship between legal action and social change, and to promote debate on how public interest litigation has influenced or contributed to social change in Ireland, on a range of issues. There will be a focus on legal cases which have brought about social change for women in Ireland. Speakers will explore both the experience of taking such cases, and the impact that these cases have had.
This is the first in a series of seminars being organised by Prof. Ivana Bacik (Law School, TCD) and Dr. Mary Rogan (DIT Law) in partnership with the Public Interest Law Alliance (PILA), the National Women’s Council (NWCI), the Gay & Lesbian Equality Network (GLEN) and the Immigrant Council of Ireland (ICI).
Speakers include Máirín de Burca (feminist activist, litigant in 1975 De Burca case); Professor Aileen McColgan (King’s College London); Orla O’Connor (National Women’s Council Ireland); Mary O’Toole (SC) ; Professor Yvonne Scannell (TCD); Dr. Micheline Sheehy-Skeffington (TBA).
