Workshop: Engaging with new equality and human rights infrastructure – 8 December 2014

Date: 8 December 2014, 10am-1pm (lunch provided)

Venue: Nasc, Ferry Lane, Cork

To mark International Human Rights Week, the Equality & Rights Alliance and Nasc invite you to:

‘Engaging with the new equality and human rights infrastructure: Progressing equality and human rights for your community’

These are difficult times for those involved in the struggle for equality and human rights. Civil society is under unprecedented pressure. Equality and human rights issues have slipped off the political agenda. Austerity has resulted in growing levels of inequality and discrimination and our equality and human rights infrastructure has been badly diminished in recent years.

There are also new opportunities to reinvigorate our ambition for equality and human rights following the newly merged Human Rights and Equality Commission and the new positive duty on the public sector to have regard to equality and human rights.

Speakers include:  Niall Crowley, Chair of ERA; Rachel Mullen, ERA Co-ordinator; Fiona Finn, CEO of Nasc

The workshop will explore:

  1. The current context of persistent and growing levels of inequality, poverty and discrimination,
  2. Making use of new opportunities:
    • The new Irish Human Rights and Equality Commission.
    • The new positive duty on the public sector to have regard to equality and human rights.
    • The role of civil society organisations in making the equality legislation, human rights infrastructure effective
  3. Case study- Nasc: addressing the needs of migrants by supporting people taking cases to Equality Tribunal and using international human rights instruments.

This workshop is geared towards civil society organisations but all are welcome.  To download the invite, click here.  To register for the event, please email jennifer@nascireland.org.
