Law Society of Ireland: Certificate in Human Rights Law

This course aims to introduce participants to the regional, national, and international human rights framework. It will also provide practical guidance on enforcing human rights in the legal arena. The overall objective is to encourage participants to develop skills necessary for pursuing human rights based arguments, including practice and procedure, using human rights legal databases and issue identification.
Learning outcomes:
On completion of this course, participants will:
- Identify key concepts underpinning the realisation of human rights
- Recognise universally accepted human rights norms as reflected by the Irish Constitution, European Convention on Human Rights, and major international treaties and conventions
- Analyse key case law from the Irish courts when applying international norms to the interpretation of constitutionally protected rights within specific substantive areas such as family law, freedom of speech, criminal law and prisoner’s rights
- Evaluate the challenges and opportunities for practitioners when bringing human rights claims and assess likely outcomes in matters ripe for such claims in areas such as mental health detention, social welfare, and immigration
- Examine impact of European Convention on Human Rights Act 2003 on developing case law from a practitioner’s perspective
The course satisfies the full CPD hours requirements for 2015 provided relevant sessions are attended and the cost of the course is €1,200.
