UCD Annual Keith Cameron lecture: Australian asylum and immigration policy - Dublin, 22 September

University College Dublin’s annual Keith Cameron Lecture will be given this year by Fr Frank Brennan SJ on Australia’s controversial asylum seeker policy on Monday 22 September 2014.

In recent years Australian governments on both sides of politics have adopted stringent measures to prevent asylum seekers arriving in Australia by boat. These measures include mandatory detention including detention of children, sending asylum seekers to Papua New Guinea and Nauru to process their asylum applications, refusing to settle in Australia any asylum seeker found to be a refugee who has arrived by boat, turning boats back to Indonesia, offering financial incentives to asylum seekers to return to their homeland.

Dubbed "the meddling priest" by former Prime Minister Paul Keating, Fr Brennan has been a long-time advocate of the rights of asylum seekers and refugees. He is Professor of Law at the Australian Catholic University but has recently taken up the Gasson Chair at Boston College. Click here for more information on Fr Brennan.

Fr Brennan will give the Keith Cameron Lecture on Monday 22 September 2014 at 5pm in the Newman Building, Room K114, UCD.
