International Bridges to Justice (IBJ) is an organisation which works towards ending the use of torture as an investigative tool in the 21st century. International Bridges to Justice (IBJ) mission is to guarantee all citizens the access to competent legal representation and right to a fair trial, prevent torture and cruel punishment. With offices in six countries, IBJ works to systematically end torture of persons in police and prison custody by supporting public defenders and ensuring early access to counsel to accused persons.
To reach out to a wider community of human rights defenders, IBJ has been hosting the ‘JusticeMakers’ Competition since 2008. Through this competition,IBJ provides fellowships of $5000 to defenders in developing countries around the world, to run an annual project focusing on awareness and enforcement of due process rights. In addition to the grant amount, IBJ provides strategic support to these projects and monitors their progress, through the year. Having local activists run projects on the ground has been a truly effective method of reaching out and supporting those in need. This year, IBJ is reaching out to a diverse group of human rights defenders by releasing our JusticeMakers application and running the competition in English, French, Spanish, Russian and Arabic.
If you are a legal community member (lawyer, a law graduate student etc.) and
you have innovative ideas on how to prevent the use of torture in detention centres or accelerate early access to counsel, you are invited to submit your project proposal by September 15, 2014.
