Justice Across Borders is a new UK pro bono service providing legal support to British citizens and their families that are victims of serious crime abroad. Justice Across Boarders’ operates on the basis that families can only secure justice for their loved ones when they are given adequate legal advice, representation, detailed explanation of how the criminal justice system in the relevant foreign country works, and access to translated documents and interpretation in court.
To assist families of victims of crime abroad, Justice Across Boarders are developing a network of lawyers in the UK and abroad willing to give advice and represent families on a pro bono basis. They currently work with a variety of legal stakeholders including law firms, individual academics and renowned institutions. The UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office may partner with the service in the near future.
Justice Across Borders is currently working with ten families, four of which have been paired with lawyers on a pro bono basis. It also works with Victim Support, an organisation providing financial assistance to families of crime victims within the UK. Justice Across Boarders provide an advocacy service for families that require financial assistance when Victim Support cannot provide financial help with travel expenses, and other costs such as repatriation of a loved one’s.
