United Nations Youth Volunteer Programme; deadline 13 September

The United Nations Youth Volunteer (formerly UNV Internship) programme is aimed at recent graduates who are interested in volunteering and in developing a career in overseas development but have limited professional experience.

Irish Aid will sponsor 14 UN Youth Volunteer positions in 2014 and is inviting applications from individuals with a strong interest in building a career in development work.

UN Youth Volunteers are placed with UN agencies in a field office for a period of 12 months (non-renewable).   Volunteers are provided with return air-tickets, a monthly living allowance according to the cost of living in the country of assignment as well as life and health insurance throughout the assignment.

Essential criteria

·         An interest in a career in development and a desire to contribute, in the future, to the Irish development effort

·         Minimum of 1 year work experience

·         Experience of living, working or volunteering in a developing country

·         Experience of volunteering in Ireland or abroad

·         Knowledge of the work of Irish Aid and the Irish development sector

·         Robust mental and physical health

·         A capacity to work in difficult conditions

·         Ability to work harmoniously in a multicultural environment and respect diversity

·         Excellent communication and team working skills

·         Strong planning and organisation skills

·         Fluency in English

Desirable criteria

·         Proficiency in an official language of the UN (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian and Spanish) or Portuguese will also be an asset.
