The recent award to UCC from the SFI centres programme represents an enormous investment in research in UCC, which will impact very substantially on the support mechanisms and resources of the institution. To put this in context UCC currently spends approx. €80M per annum on research – the total investment (SFI and industry) through this new initiative is €300M over 6 years with UCC leading 4 of the 7 centres and co-leading one other. These awards represent the single largest state investment in research and the majority of these funds will be managed by UCC. These are national, multi-institutional centres, with significant industrial engagement.
To ensure the effective post-award implementation of the SFI centres within UCC, and taking into account the number of awards, the size of the awards and the complexity of the engagements (institutional and industrial) that need to be managed and which are essential to successful implementation, we are currently seeking to appoint a Senior Research Coordinator Solicitor to provide legal & contract management support, for which funding has been awarded for two years initially, and may be extended thereafter, subject to completion of a successful project review and funding being continued. The Senior Research Coordinator Solicitor will provide a key strategic role for the University in ensuring the effective contract negotiations for all sponsor engagements.
The post holder will be based in and a member of the office of corporate and legal affairs and will provide legal services in relation to the SFI centres. The post holder will report to the University Solicitor within the office of corporate and legal affairs. It is expected that the establishment of this post will ensure the timely availability of legal advice, ensure that all research contracts and agreements binding the University receive legal scrutiny before execution and that the process of engagement with industry and sponsors is efficient and that internal expertise will be built up in the areas of contract management, research, technology transfer and intellectual property.
