Pavee Point Traveller and Roma Centre Report Launch, ‘Travelling with Austerity ’-Community Development & Impacts of Cuts on Travellers’ – 29 April, Dublin

Date: 29 April 2013

Time: 11:00 am

Location: Pavee Point Travellers and Roma Centre, 46 North Great Charles St, Dublin 1

Written by Brian Harvey, the report is an examination of the cumulative impact of the cuts in spending on the Traveller sector in Ireland since 2008. Brian will present the findings at the launch and this will be followed by a discussion moderated by Matt Cooper.

“The manner in which austerity has been applied to the Traveller community makes consideration of the future of community development work in this field a sobering exercise.  …Traveller community development has seen its funding fall in a band from 29% to 63%, while in two of the areas most important to the Traveller community, education and housing, funding is down -86% and -85%.  It is very difficult to find commitments by the government to ‘social inclusion’ and ‘protecting the vulnerable’ credible or trustworthy in the light of these facts.”

“This is a striking picture.  One can think of no other section of the community which has suffered such a high level of disinvestment, compounded by the failure of the state to spend even the limited resources that are available.”
