UCC Law Faculty - Seminar on the Children's Referendum- 18 October, Cork

A Public Information Evening at UCC Faculty of Law: Talking about Children’s Rights: the Promise and Potential of the Children’s Referendum

Time: 6:30pm – 8:30 pm

Date: Thursday October 18

Venue: Áras na Laoi, Room G30

A Referendum will be held on November 10 to decide whether to insert a new provision into the Irish Constitution protecting the rights of children, but debate thus far has been characterised by broad consensus in favour of the amendment and limited detailed analysis of its likely impact. Under the auspices of the UCC Child Law Clinic and Constitution Project @ UCC, this seminar will draw on the experience of a number of recognised experts on constitutional and child law. It will consider the reasons why the amendment has been put forward, placing this in an international and policy context, and assess the extent to which the law relating to children and families will be changed by the amendment if the people vote in favour.

Programme:

6.30: Professor Ursula Kilkelly, Dean of the Faculty of Law and Director of the Child Law Clinic: “The International and Policy Context behind the Amendment”

6.45: Dr Conor O’Mahony, Lecturer in Constitutional Law: “The Constitution Before and After the Amendment”

7.00: Dr Simone McCaughren, Lecturer in Applied Social Studies: “The Potential Impact of the Amendment on Adoption Law and Practice”

7.15: Dr Aisling Parkes, Lecturer in Children’s Rights: “The Child’s Right to be Heard under the Amendment: A Real Commitment to Listening to our Children?”

7.30 – 8.30: Panel discussion and question & answer session
