New Community Law & Mediation Service for Limerick

Northside Community Law and Mediation Centre (NCLMC) has received funding from the Limerick Regeneration Agencies and the Public Interest Law Alliance (a project of FLAC) to establish a community law and mediation service in Limerick city. The funding will allow NCLMC to employ a solicitor who will be based in Limerick to establish legal information, advice, and advocacy services and to develop community dispute resolution services in Limerick, for one year. The service will be a city wide service, based in Limerick MABS, and will specifically target services through outreach centres in the regeneration areas in Limerick city. Recruitment for the solicitor will begin soon and it is hoped that the service will begin in the autumn.

"Community Law services are based on the community law centre model which originated in the United States during the 1960’s as part of President Lyndon B Johnson's war on poverty. The idea is that the law and lawyers be used by communities to fight poverty and promote social inclusion. This is an extremely historic development, as this is the first service of its kind to be delivered outside of Dublin" says Moya de Paor,  Acting Managing Solicitor, NCLMC. "This project has come about from representations made by community representatives and activists in Limerick and NCLMC very much appreciates the support of the funders for this important and much needed service". Colin Daly, who was recently appointed a District Court Judge, was instrumental in establishing this project.
