Department of Foreign Affairs, Human Rights Internship, Dublin - deadline 15 June 2012

The Department of Foreign Affairs is inviting applications for internships in its Human Rights Unit in Dublin and in the Permanent Mission of Ireland to the United Nations in Geneva. 

Human Rights are accorded a high priority in Irish foreign policy.  The Human Rights Unit coordinates policy and ensures that human rights concerns are given full expression in all areas of the Government’s foreign policy.   The internship in the Human Rights Unit is for a period of eleven months, commencing in September 2012.  A shortlist of suitable candidates will be established from which the internship positions will be filled. 

The successful candidate will possess the following qualifications/experience:

  • A first or second class honours degree in International Relations, Human Rights, Law, Politics or another relevant discipline is required.
  • A strong interest in human rights and current affairs is desirable.
  • A good knowledge of International and/or Human Rights Law is desirable.
  • Previous work experience with organisations working in the field of Human Rights would also be desirable.
  • Good computer skills are essential.
  • Flexibility, initiative, good judgement and the ability to work with a team are essential.
  • Proficiency in the French language, while not essential, is desirable.

Applications can be submitted by post or by e-mail.  Applications received after the closing date for applications will not be considered.  Selection will be on the basis of a competitive interview.  If a large number of applications is received, candidates will be short listed for interview on the basis of information supplied in their application.  Interviews will take place in Dublin the week beginning 23 July 2012.
