Irish Human Rights Commission Internship, Dublin - deadline 18 May 2012

The Irish Human Rights Commission (IHRC) are offering Internships and Professional Placement Opportunities in the Enquiries and Legal Services Division.

An Internship opportunity is aimed at post-graduate students seeking to gain experience in this area. A Professional Placement opportunity is designed to help broaden the experience of qualified Legal Professionals by working with Ireland's National Human Rights Institution. Opportunities in this area would expose the successful applicants to a diverse range of human rights issues within the legal and investigative functions of the Commission. The positions are particularly suitable for persons who wish to gain legal experience on human rights issues at the domestic level and examine the practical application of international and regional human rights standards within domestic law and policy, in furtherance of the Commission's key strategic goals.

Types of tasks:

The incumbents would assist in the substantive areas of work of the Enquiries and Legal section and his or her tasks may include: assistance in filing and serving legal submissions and assisting in legal administrative work in support of IHRC functions, conducting in-depth and practical work on specific human rights issues relative to individual communications; carrying out general legal research including into Constitutional and international law standards, carrying out research and report writing in support of IHRC enquiries into human rights matters, assisting in preparation of legal submissions to the IHRC and to the Courts, as required.

Essential criteria for applicants for these positions:

  • Fluency in English;
  • Postgraduate or Higher;
  • Some work experience in a professional environment;
  • Demonstrated interest in the area of human rights;
  • A good knowledge of constitutional and international human rights law;
  • Availability for not less than 4 months (preference will be given to those available for 6 months); 
  • Permission to be legally resident in Ireland;
  • Support from an institution / organisation;
  • Strong research and legal analysis skills;
  • Strong report and legal submission writing skills;
  • Ability to work to specific deadlines;
  • Applicants should also be in a position to deal effectively with individual communications and to assist in legal administrative work.
