Interights Security & Rule of Law Lawyer, London - deadline 13 May

Established in 1982 INTERIGHTS has played a leading role in promoting human rights through the use of international and comparative law. It has pursued this through strategic litigation, capacity building and providing information to lawyers, judges and civil society partners worldwide. INTERIGHTS currently focuses its activities in Africa, Europe, the Middle East and North Africa and South Asia, and thematically on economic and social rights, equality and security and the rule of law.

INTERIGHTS requires a Lawyer with good experience of working in the human rights sector on Security and Rule of Law (SEROL) and litigating human rights cases on SEROL issues. The SEROL Lawyer must have substantial litigation experience using regional and international human rights instruments, as well as an in-depth understanding of international and comparative human rights law, mechanisms and institutions.

The SEROL Lawyer will develop and implement INTERIGHTS’ programme on Security and the Rule of Law (and in particular as regards counter-terrorism and extra-legal rendition) identifying areas of the law in which strategic litigation and other means of intervention will advance legal standards in this field.

The successful candidate will also be responsible for devising and delivering training, capacity building, and supervising interns and volunteers as well as budget management, participating in the annual planning and budgeting processes and supporting fundraising and communication initiatives.

This is a rewarding and challenging role that requires excellent communication skills in both spoken and written English, a Law degree (or another degree with post graduate diploma in law), and applicants must have been admitted to legal practice. The successful applicant must have sensitivity to working in a multicultural environment and commitment to promoting respect for equality and diversity.

This is a full-time fixed-term role for a 6-month period, and is based in London. The benefits for this post include annual leave of 25 days per year, and public holidays (pro-rata), plus time off during the Christmas period when the office closes from the 24th December -1st January inclusive. A limited amount of international travel will be required.
