Iraqi citizen challenges hooding of suspects

An Iraqi citizen has won his case in a London High Court regarding the hooding of terror suspects. Alaa' Nassif Jassim al-Bazzouni challenged guidance on hooding on the basis that it "explicitly and unlawfully condones the barbaric practice of hooding prisoners for transit and security reasons." Bazzouni, who resides in Basra, was hooded by British troops during the war against Saddam Hussein in 2006. The two judges held that the hooding should not take place as it presents a risk to both physical and mental health.

Phil Shiner, of Public interest Lawyers who represented Bazzouni commented: "This judgment represents the final nail in the coffin of the Ministry of Defence's desperate and morally corrupt efforts to keep hooding alive as a possible interrogation technique."
