Irish Save the Date for Universal Periodic Review; watch the hearing live 6 October!

A banner has been erected in Dublin displaying a date when Ireland's human rights record will be examined for the first time by the United Nations "Universal Periodic Review" in Geneva on 6 October 2011. The hearing can also be watched live online.

The Universal Periodic Review (UPR) is a distinct UN process whereby UN member states review each other's human rights records. The UN makes recommendations to the State under review which are to be put into practice before the State's next review.

The Director of the Irish Council for Civil Liberties Mark Kelly commented "This is a giant save -the-date for one of the most important events in Ireland's human rights calendar. On 6 October 2011 in Geneva, Minister for Justice Alan Shatter TD will present his defence of Ireland's human rights record to a jury of his peers from the other member States of the United Nations".
