Irish Equality Authority launches annual report

The Irish Equality Authority (EA) has launched its 2010 Annual Report. The legal section, which delivers free legal advice and representation in matters of strategic importance opened 116 new case files mainly in the area of employment law and a further 200 case files drew to a close. In line with statistics from the previous year, legal assistance was most in demand in the areas of disability and gender, closely followed by age and race.

Among the policy achievements discussed in the Report are the passing of the Civil Partnership Act, the submission of the report from the Committee on Gender Recognition for Transgendered People and the submission to The Law Reform Commission on legal aspects of family relationships.

The EA published the Equality Benefits tool for public and private sector employers and service providers. Surveys carried out by the EA show that people with a foreign name who apply for jobs are less likely to succeed than those with Irish names.

The Guidelines for Secondary Level Schools in Development Planning and research carried out by the education sector on homophobic bullying in Schools were also important achievements in 2010, the Report highlights.
