Dr Mary Rogan's book, Prison Policy in Ireland, was launched on 30 June. The book investigates and describes prison policy in Ireland since the foundation of the State in 1922, analyses and assesses the factors influencing policy during this period and explores and examines the links between prison policy and the wider development of the Irish state.
Liam Herrick, Executive Director at the Irish Penal Reform Trust, utilised the venue of the launch, Kilmainham Gaol, to point out that conditions in Mountjoy Prison today would be similar, yet more crowded. However he remained optimistic about the future of Irish prison policy, saying that it was not a "false dawn", but a chance to seize a receptive moment to make real and relevant reform.
