Advocates for Victims of Homicide (AdVIC), the Victims Right Alliance, in conjunction with Victim Support Northern Ireland and Victim Support Europe [VSE], are hosting the annual Victim Support Europe Conference in Dublin on the 17 and 18 of May 2017.

The Conference is a major international event which brings together key players working with victims of crime. Between 200 and 250 people attend this event annually from victim support organisations, to NGOs, psychologists, academics, government officials, police, prosecutors, judges and lawyers. The most important event in your calendar this year will take place in the beautiful 300 year old Royal Hospital in Kilmainham, in Dublin. http://www.rhk.ie/

The theme of this year’s conference is ‘Victims of Crime: Rights, Needs & Responses’. On the 16th of November 2015 the Victims’ Directive was transposed into EU law. At the international level, laws and conventions have been in place for over 35 years. Whilst we have seen many improvements, still today, these rights either do not exist in reality for many victims of crime.

Government, police, victim support organisations, lawyers and other key stakeholders need to work together ensure that victims of crime are getting access to their rights in practice in line with national, European and international laws. Assessing the needs of victims of crime is key in order to ascertain whether current responses are adequate.

This year’s Conference will focus on all victims of crime but it will also consider emerging trends in victims’ rights, needs and responses internationally. In particular, the Conference will consider the needs and responses for victims of terrorism, hate crime, online crime and historical abuse.

The Victim Support Europe Conference will offer you the opportunity to network and learn from people working with victims of crime from around the world. You will forge new connections and reignite old ones, which will facilitate the sharing of information and best practice once you return home from the conference.
