Irish Human Rights and Equality Commission launches first annual report

The Irish Human Rights and Equality Commission (IHREC) laid its Annual Report 2015 before the House of the Oireachtas.This is the first annual report to be submitted on the work of the Commission since it was established as an independent public body in November 2014.

The Commission’s purpose as an independent statutory authority, as set out under the Irish Human Rights and Equality Commission 2014 Act, is to protect and promote human rights and equality in Ireland, and to build a culture of respect for human rights, equality and intercultural understanding across society.

Speaking at the launch of the report Chief Commissioner Emily Logan outlined the Commissions' priority areas; the importance of its collaboration with the Northern Ireland Human Rights Commission as provided for under the Good Friday Agreement and areas of particular concern to Commission for which work had been undertaken in respect of during the reporting period. The report also highlighted the significant ground work which was laid in 2015 as part of the establishment of the new entity; which will be crucual to the effective fulfilment of its mandate as Ireland's national human rights monitoring body in the State.
