Aims & Objectives: The 13th Annual Human Rights Conference is entitled “Human Rights and the Media: Balancing Public and Private Interests”. The aim of this year’s conference is to examine the interplay between the right to freedom of expression and the individual’s right to privacy in light of human rights law. The focus will be on considering the topics of press freedom and the potential conflict with individuals’ right to privacy in addition to considering emerging concerns around digital privacy and online surveillance. The objective is to provide attendees with a broad overview of these issues from a variety of perspectives.

This conference has been designed by the Law Society Human Rights Committee in partnership with the Dublin Solicitors’ Bar Association for all who might have an interest in human rights and freedom of expression/right to privacy with the aim of bringing together legal practitioners, members of the public, as well as academics, human rights organisations and civil society organisations to explore these issues. The Conference has been structured to allow sufficient time for an extensive panel discussion of the conference topics.

·         Potential conflict between press freedom and individual privacy;

·         Digital privacy and data retention;

·         Increasing significance and impact of online surveillance.
