Lady Hale on ‘Diversity in the Judiciary’ – 15 May 2015, Limerick

The School of Law and the Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences of the University of Limerick are delighted to welcome to UL the Right Hon. Lady Hale, Deputy President, Supreme Court of the United Kingdom.  Lady Hale will be presenting on Diversity in the Judiciary. The lecture will be chaired by The Hon. Mr. Justice John L. Murray, Justice of the Supreme Court and former Chief Justice of Ireland.

A graduate of Cambridge in 1966 Lady Hale taught law specialising in the areas of Social Welfare and Family law at Manchester University until 1984. During this period she became the founding editor of the Journal of Social Welfare and Family Law.  In 1984 she became the first woman to be appointed to the Law Commission, a law reform recommendation body. She went on to sit as a High Court Judge in 1994 and was only the second woman to be promoted to the Court of Appeal in 1999 before becoming the first female Law Lord.

Lady Hale became the United Kingdom’s first woman Lord of Appeal in Ordinary in 2004, after a varied career as an academic lawyer, law reformer, and judge. She is now the first woman Justice of the Supreme Court of the United Kingdom.
