Programme Lawyer, Access to Justice, Malawi – deadline 31 December 2014

Irish Rule of Law International is seeking a Programme Lawyer to join its access to justice team in Lilongwe, Malawi.  The position of Programme Lawyer is for a period of one year commencing 23 February 2015, with opportunity for extension.  Travel expenses, health insurance and accommodation costs will be provided for, in addition to a monthly volunteer living allowance.

The main project priorities areto ensure that prisoners and those in police custody are guaranteed their due process rights and given greater access to restorative justice practices, and to ensure that knowledge of due process rights, human rights compliance and legal skills amongst criminal justice stakeholders is increased and applied. 

The Programme Lawyer will be based in the Legal Aid Department (LAD) and will undertake activities with a view to: 

  • Strengthening the legal aid system in Malawi
  • Decreasing the backlog of cases in the criminal justice system
  • Building IRLI's reputation with a particular focus on IRLI’s relationship with the LAD and the prisons
  • Improving communication networks and co-ordination between the main stakeholders within the criminal justice system, both governmental and nongovernmental
  • Strengthening sector linkages and coordination with other international actors by information sharing and collaboration
  • Improving knowledge at community level on topics relating to criminal law and human rights
