This is a key appointment in the School of Law. The School of Law at Essex University seeks to explore justice, locally, nationally, and globally, through excellent legal research and education. We have nurtured research across many fields of law, in particular: International Human Rights Law, Public Law, and Commercial Law. Our research and engagement across the field of legal disciplines shapes thinking and action about the law and justice at all levels. Our graduates are equipped with the legal knowledge and skills to be agents for innovation and growth in the businesses and organisations they go on to join and lead. The School's principal aims are to build on our areas of success, fostering an environment conducive to the highest quality research unbound by artificial limits, founded in theory and applied practice.  The individual will be expected to play a leading role in continuing to fulfil the School’s vision.

To be appointed to the Professor / Chair an individual will have a clearly established international level reputation in the field of International Human Rights Law or a related field of Public International Law, such as International Criminal Law or International Humanitarian Law, and will be recognised as one of the leaders in their field. For the Readership the appointee will have an outstanding record of excellent research and be able to display clear potential to achieve a chair level appointment in a UK university.

At either level of appointment the individual will be able to make a significant contribution to the development of research and teaching and provide strong and effective research leadership for a team of dynamic and committed scholars. In addition to a general expertise in the field of Public International Law, the individual will be expected to have a recognised expertise in a particular area of International Human Rights Law, International Criminal Law, International Humanitarian Law or directly related fields.
