UCD Seminar with Hauwa Ibrahim, Nigerian human rights lawyer – 18 June, Dublin

The School of Politics and International Relations and the UCD Human Rights Network invite you to a seminar with Hauwa Ibrahim, Winner of the European Parliament’s Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought, 2005.

Hauwa Ibrahim is a Nigerian human rights lawyer, who has won a number of precedent setting cases before Islamic Shariah Courts. She is perhaps most famous for being a lawyer for Amina Lawal and Safiya Hussaini, both sentenced to death by stoning for having a child outside of marriage. Both sentences were overturned. Ibrahim is currently a visiting lecturer at Harvard University and is the author of Practicing Shariah Law: Seven Strategies for Achieving Justice in Shariah Courts (American Bar Association, 2013).
