Senior Counsel Gerard Hogan nominated to the High Court

The Government has nominated Gerard Hogan SC for elevation to the High Court to replace Mr Justice Liam McKechnie, who was appointed to the Supreme Court in July.

Mr. Hogan graduated in law from UCD in 1979 and went on to further studies in the United States before returning to Ireland to lecture in Trinity College, where he taught until 2007. He was called to the bar in 1984, and became a senior counsel in 1997. He was elected a Bencher of the King's Inn in 2009. He is highly regarded as a legal academic, having published updated editions of JM Kelly's The Irish Constitution, since 1987, and will shortly publish a new edition of Administrative Law in Ireland, with Professor David Gwynn Morgan of UCC. The appointment will be made by President Mary McAleese.
